about

A song written about my Great Uncle who was killed in France in 1915. I bought the diary of his regiment. On the day he died it said: 'Today was just an ordinary day." Scribbled in the margin was a note saying: 'One soldier killed today.'

lyrics

February 1915 the time that he fell.
There's nothing great about a war
That only engenders hell.
I went and bought the diary
Of his regiment's war.
I thought it might give insight
To the horror that he saw
I turned to the entry
For the day that he died
A note scribbled in the margin
Tore at my insides. It read:

Just an ordinary day
One soldier killed today.

A hundred years later and so much has gone
But all around the world
The killing still goes on
Somewhere, some place in a foreign land
Another soldier bravely dies
And somewhere, some place
In someone's no-man's land
Another mother vainly cries.

Just an ordinary day
One soldier killed today.
