about

This album is inspired by my 3x great grandmother a 19th century formidable woman ahead of her time. She suffered at the hands of a drunk and violent husband. In 1849, when her children had grown and left home, aged 56 she embarked upon a courageous and remarkable 'escape' across the Atlantic to America. The songs are about how I imagined the main protagonists must have felt.

Track Name: When My Ship Comes In
It was in the spring of 49
That I moved to this town.
"The old country ways are dead,' they said.
It's where work would be found.

I took whatever work was going,
I never had any say.
Now I work 14 hours at a stretch
Just to earn an honest day's pay.

But one day I know I'll win
I'm going to leave this city of sin
The day when my ship comes in.

I married a widow in 53
And took on her children too.
Now with 6 children of our own,
I worry how we'll ever get through.

You see my boss, he's unconcerned.
He treats his workers like dogs
And this city wears its dirt like a shroud
You can't see the stars for smog.

Well I've never been one for fancy words,
Life has been my school.
But I learnt one thing form an early age,
You daren't treat me like a fool

You see I never had no learnin'
And I can barely write my name
I just stoke the fires of hell all day
To keep this city aflame.
Track Name: Stoke a Fire
You stole my shoes and then you stole my heart
You had me figured out right from the start.
You chose to leave, I never thought that you would
Cos you knew in your heart that I was no good.

And I was foolish trying to act so strong
Because you'd made your mind up all along.
I know it's ended and I know it's time
But I still love you, is that such a crime?

And you've stoked a fire in my heart.

I know I should've rung that temperance bell.
And the temper in me, well it put you through hell.
I know it's ended and I know it's time
But I still love you, is that such a crime.

You've stoked a fire in my heart.

The western wind it lured you away
And I'll regret it till my dying day.
For you were a wild one, always running free
But I still love you can't you see?
Track Name: The Other Side of the World
On the other side of the world
The sun does shine.
Whilst here it rains,
It rains all the time.

On the other side of the world
Are flowers in bloom.
Whilst here darkness,
Fills the room.

She's on the other side of the world.

On the others side of the world
She's getting dressed
Whilst me I'm ready
I'm ready for my bed

On the other side of the world
There's something lost
And I'm just left here
Trying to count the cost

Now the world still turns as before
And by now I should know the score
I'm trying to live to promises I just can't keep
And I'm always falling in too deep.
Track Name: New World
Now I've always been a free spirit
And I ain't never been one to run
But I could see it in his eyes
That all the good had gone.

And as God will be my witness
I did try to make it work
But through the violence and the tears,
A soul can only take so much hurt.

Now I'm so far from home
And I know I'll never see it again
And this New World has me afraid
But it's better than a life of pain.

Such a cruel crossing we had,
I felt my world had turned black
And through the storms and the sickness
I thought God had turned his back.

Like the children of Israel
I have searched for promised land
And though I've left behind my family
I know God will take my hand.

And I'm so far from home
I know I'll never see it again
This New World has me afraid
But it's better than a life of pain

Now you keep your indignation
If you were there you'd have done the same
You say every one can be redeemed
Well I pray for my soul to be reclaimed

I pledged till death do us part
And now I fear I'll be thrown into the fire
It's only me and God I trust
Guess it's for Him to call me a liar.
Track Name: Closing Time
It's funny the things that can make you sad
I was thinking about all the good times we had
Every detail I can recall.
From the smell of your hair, to the sound of your call.

And all we needed was a little time.

She brushes her hair behind her ears.
Then covers her eyes to hide her tears.
Oh why can't we say what we really mean?
All this aggression, just seems so obscene.

Time it slips away.
I can't remember your face.
Time it slips away.
